Authorities in Parma HeightsOhio are investigating a heartbreaking incident involving the death of an 18-year-old student at Valley Forge High School.

According to officials, the incident occurred Monday afternoon when law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting on the school campus. Officers were dispatched at approximately 2:10 p.m. after emergency calls alerted authorities to the situation inside the school cafeteria.

The Parma Police Department confirmed that the event involved a single gunshot and only one individual. Officials emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to other students, staff, or the surrounding community.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified the student as 18-year-old Marissa R. Rand of Parma. Authorities confirmed that she died after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At the time of the incident, the school day was nearing its end, with students preparing for dismissal. The cafeteria—normally a place where students gather to eat, talk, and spend time together—became the scene of a tragedy that has deeply shaken the school community.

First responders quickly arrived and provided emergency medical care before transporting Rand to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of paramedics and medical staff, she later succumbed to her injuries.
