The community of OttumwaIowa is grappling with shock and grief following a violent early-morning home invasion that left 45-year-old Jeremy Ray Showalter dead.

According to the Ottumwa Police Department, officers were dispatched around 5:35 a.m. on April 21, 2026, to a residence at 333 Evergreen after receiving a frantic 911 call reporting that a man had been shot. When officers and deputies from the Wapello County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the home, they found Showalter inside suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Emergency responders quickly attempted to provide medical aid before transporting him to Ottumwa Regional Health Center for treatment. Despite those efforts, authorities later confirmed that Showalter succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators say the incident occurred during what appears to have been a violent home invasion. Evidence at the scene reportedly included signs of a struggle inside the residence, as officers began securing the area and collecting evidence as part of the ongoing homicide investigation.

Within hours of the incident, authorities arrested 24-year-old Michael Joe Johnson of Sigourney. Johnson is now facing serious charges under Iowa law, including first-degree murder and first-degree burglary. Officials say the arrest came after an intensive search and investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

Lt. Jason Bell of the Ottumwa Police Department confirmed that investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether any additional individuals were involved.

Jeremy Ray Showalter is remembered by friends and family as a longtime resident of Ottumwa and a hardworking man who maintained strong connections within his community. His sudden and tragic death has left loved ones mourning and searching for answers.

Authorities say the investigation remains active as they continue gathering evidence and preparing the case for prosecution.
