Authorities in Teotihuacán Archaeological Zone, Mexico are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred Monday near the Pyramid of the Moon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country’s most visited landmarks.

According to initial reports, emergency services were alerted at approximately 11:20 a.m. after an armed individual opened fire on visitors within the archaeological complex, located about 30 miles northeast of Mexico City. The incident resulted in two deaths, including a Canadian tourist identified as Li Desong and the suspected attacker.

Authorities say the assailant, identified as 27-year-old Julio César Jasso Ramírez from Tlapa, began firing a handgun near the Pyramid of the Moon, where numerous tourists were present. The structure is a major attraction within the ancient city, drawing visitors from around the world who climb its steps and gather along the Avenue of the Dead.

The Mexican National Guard and local emergency responders quickly moved to secure the area and assist the injured. At least 13 people were reported hurt, with injuries ranging from gunshot wounds to trauma sustained during the chaotic evacuation of the site.

Officials stated that the suspect later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though some witness accounts suggest that law enforcement may have engaged him during the response. Investigators are still working to clarify the exact sequence of events leading to his death.

The shooting occurred in a location typically known for its cultural significance and heavy tourist presence, making the attack particularly shocking for visitors and authorities alike.
